Common Wheat Cultivation

Communal wheat cultivation – a year of cultivation, learning and community 🌾
What fun we've had! 😃
Through the Allkorn association (the association for cultivated grains), of which I am chairman, we started the Joint Wheat Cultivation project almost a year ago. With inspiration from The Sheffield Wheat Experiment and support from the Anna Borgeryd Memorial Fund, seeds of Dala Lantvete were sent out to nearly 100 families and individuals around the world. Örnsköldsvik Municipality to be grown on the balcony, in a pallet collar or a couple of square meters of the lawn or the pearl field. Dala country wheat was chosen because it is a cultural grain with great diversity unlike modern wheat, which makes it stable and adaptable. It also works well up here in the north to grow as bread wheat.
We also met this summer, at my place on the larger grain farm where Dala Lantvete and a lot of other grains sway in the wind. Unfortunately, the rainiest day of the whole summer, but we still had fun! 🙂

Together we have sown, cultivated, followed the development – and now also harvested!
Last weekend, a few of us gathered to thresh, grind flour, and talk about the past year. We shared experiences, both successes and challenges (including the fact that magpies seem to love wheat! 🐦).
Many thought back to our ancestors and foremothers who toiled with sowing and harvesting to put food on the table, for their daily bread. It was also a reminder of the hard work that goes into every loaf of bread – and of the importance of preparedness and local resources, or perhaps the lack of both among us!

Part of the harvest is now being saved as seed for next spring, while the rest has been turned into flour, bread and rolls! 🍞✨
We are already looking forward to continuing this year, now with our own seeds – because surely local grain for bread should be a matter of course?!

Thank you to everyone who participated and made this possible!
